Moving items into storage can be stressful, but it does not have to be! You can have an easy, stress-free move. These six things that you need to know will help guide the way.
1. Self-Service Storage or Full-Service Storage
Most of the time people choose self-service over full-service because it is more readily available and more cost effective. A benefit to full-service storage is that someone will come to your home, pick up the items, and safely deposit them into storage.
2. Insurance
You definitely want to be certain that your items in storage are protected. There are a variety of types of insurance available, and you may already be covered under your current renter’s or homeowner’s insurance. Communicate with both the storage facility and your insurance company to find out if your items are covered.
3. Climate control
Having a storage unit with climate control can be very beneficial. Certain items, such as paper and metals, do not withstand heat and humidity well. Furniture and clothing also do better in climate controlled conditions, where the humidity is kept at a consistent level.
4. Items That Should Not Be Stored
There will be some items that you should not store simply because you may need quick access to them, such as your driver’s license and checkbook. Other items you will want to keep with you simply because they are so valuable, such as heirlooms or photo albums. Then there are items that simply will not be allowed. Check with your storage unit for their specific guidelines. These may include items such as firearms and flammable liquids.
5. Packing Tips
There are different reasons why you may be storing your belongings, and those may lend to different ways of packing your storage unit. If you are storing everything, then you will want to pack your storage unit opposite of how it will be loaded into the moving truck. If you have a moving company, check with them for guidelines. You may be moving just some items into storage temporarily to sell your current home or to store seasonal items. Categorize items into sections so that they are easy to find. Label all of your boxes clearly with large lettering or use a different colored piece of paper for each room and tape that on each box.
6. Amenities
There are many different kinds of amenities available in a storage unit. Some have dollies and carts available for you to use, while others require you to bring your own. Some even have washing stations with mirrors so you can fix yourself up after loading or unloading. One amenity that you want to be sure is available is security. There should be security cameras and good lighting throughout the unit. Be sure to know if you need to bring a lock or if one will be provided before you make your first drop off.
Now that you know all of the ins and outs of storage units, you can confidently choose a unit, pack up, and safely secure those precious items.
